The Manchester United jersey: the classiest and the funniest

Now, let’s take a look at some of those best and worst Manchester United shirt designs together with some pictures!

Man Utd 1998-1999 Champions League winning shirts

With white shorts, white socks and the traditional red shirt of Manchester United, that season’s shirt was undoubtedly a classic design. 1968 was the year that Manchester United reached the top of Europe for the first time, and to commemorate the honour, that season’s shirt was emblazoned with a star. This proved to be the team’s lucky star, and United wore the shirt to pull off a stunning comeback at the Camp Nou.

From the stately red to the slightly ridiculous grey, Man Utd third shirt that season was simply the worst shirt in the team’s history. In five games in this shirt, Man utd lost four and drew one. During the team’s disastrous loss to Southampton, Ferguson angrily asked the players to change out of the grey shirt at half-time, as he thought that the players would not be able to find their teammates in the shirt. Since then, Manchester United have never worn the shirt again.

No other shirt has ever reflected the spirit of the team so perfectly. Some of Man Utd hardest hitters like Schmeichel, Roy Keane, Paul Ince and Mark Hughes looked so ‘natural’ in this all-black away shirt. When we saw Cantona kick a Crystal Palace fan in 1995, we thought black was the right colour for the picture.

Man Utd 1992-1994 third shirts

Designed to carry on the spirit of the team’s predecessor, Newton Heath, Manchester United’s green and gold colours were initially thought to be a good idea. Unfortunately, the mixing of these two colours, along with the strange collar, made the Manchester United shirt design a disaster. In fact, even the handsome King Cantona looked so strange in this shirt.

Before the sponsor’s logo appeared on the shirt, the design of the shirt was very simple. In the 1950s, Manchester United’s Busby Babes wore an unglamorous but classic shirt, and in February 2008, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, Manchester United wore this classic shirt when they faced city rivals Manchester City.

The colours of the shirt were not bad, except for the two white stripes on the shoulders which were just too out of place. But when Manchester United fans saw the shirt again, their memories were fond as they wore it to win the FA Cup final that year against Everton.

Wearing this blue and white mix jersey looks like you’re playing on a big farm. But for Lee Sharp, the shirt looked particularly good, as it was in this shirt that he famously scored a hat-trick against Arsenal.

Although the likes of Boboski, Jordi Cruyff have worn this shirt, that doesn’t make it a classic as the collar as well as the sleeves are just a bit of a drag. The United king, Cantona, who liked to keep his collar up, wore this shirt for his last game for the club, which was in 1997, when Manchester United played West Ham United at home.
